Pradeep Kumar Yellapu

Pradeep Kumar Yellapu is a Research Assistant at the Xylem Lab and a Master's student in Data Science at the University of Maryland. His work is focused on the intersection of Earth observation, artificial intelligence (AI), and user experience (UX) design, where he translates complex satellite data into clear, actionable intelligence for non-technical users like farmers and policymakers.

In his role, Mr. Yellapu leads the design and architecture of the Xylem AutoPilot, a satellite data platform utilized across six countries. This involves architecting AI-augmented information systems that convert complex remote sensing signals into decision-ready intelligence, coupled with conducting essential stakeholder research with government analysts to ensure the tools meet their needs. Currently, he is focused on developing a usable area estimation interface that successfully connects geospatial workflows to something non-technical users can actually work with.

Leveraging his background in UX research and product design, Mr. Yellapu integrates mixed-methods research and design thinking into the lab's projects. He believes that thoughtful design decisions must be built on listening to users' voices through data, ensuring evidence is turned into impact. In addition to his research, he leads the visual identity for the entire Xylem ecosystem — including the Xylem Lab, Xylem Institute, and Dr. Catherine Nakalembe's website — building Figma design systems that utilize LLM-assisted tooling and MCP-powered agentic workflows to maintain consistent branding across all platforms.

Mr. Yellapu holds an M.S. in Data Science and a B.T. in Computer Science and Business Systems.
